City Court of Morgan City

Criminal and traffic court is held on Tuesdays (arraignments) and Thursdays (trials) at 2:00 p.m. Juvenile court is held on Wednesdays and civil and small claims court is held on Wednesday morning usually at 9:00 a.m.

Civil

City Court presides over cases when a civil lawsuit is filed wherein the damages or amount sued for does not exceed $15,000.00.

Small Claims

City Court presides over limited types of civil cases filed wherein the amount sued for does not exceed $5,000.00 including the following cases:

• Suits on Promissory Notes
• Suits on Open Accounts
• Suits on Negotiable Instruments

Misdemeanor

City Court handles only misdemeanor offenses. A misdemeanor is a crime that is less serious than a felony and is usually punishable by fine, penalty, and/or confinement in jail for up to 6 months.

Public Records

To obtain a disposition of a public arrest record or a civil record from City Court of Morgan City, the request must be submitted in writing and it will be responded to within 72 hours. The fee is $2.00 per page of reproduced documents.
